How do the ferries between Europe and Asia work in Istanbul?

I want to cross from Eminönü to Kadıköy by ferry. Do I need to buy a ticket in advance?

No advance ticket needed. Tap your Istanbulkart at the turnstile at the pier and walk on. The crossing takes about 20 minutes.
Check which pier your ferry leaves from; Eminönü has several, and the signs show the destination above each gate.
Sit outside on the upper deck and buy a tea and a simit from the onboard seller. One of the nicest cheap things to do in the city.
