Which area should I stay in Istanbul as a first-time visitor?

Trying to choose between Sultanahmet, Karaköy and Kadıköy. Which is best for a first visit?

Sultanahmet puts you next to the main sights, but it's quiet at night and full of tourist restaurants.
Karaköy is a good middle ground: close to the tram and ferries, with lots of cafés and restaurants.

Kadıköy feels more local and has great food, but you'll take a ferry for most sights. Great for a second visit.
